Austempering
A heat treatment for ferrous alloys in which a work piece is quenched from the austenitizing temperature at a rate fast enough to avoid formation of ferrite or pearlite. The steel is held in the molten salt bath through the bainite transformation temperatures, and then moderately cooled. The benefits of austempering include greater ductility, higher impact resistance, and less distortion.
