Case Hardening

A generic term referring to the several processes available (carburizing, carbonitriding, induction) to steel that absorbs carbon and/or nitrogen into the surface layer of a work piece. Case hardening results in higher surface hardness, which is associated with better wear resistance, while also allowing a tough core.
